Favorable Odds: How Betting Works

There’s little more thrilling than winning a bet fair and square, as any tried and true gambler could tell you. With online gambling becoming more and more popular, more people are looking to get into the action.

If you’re looking to get into the world of gambling yourself, it’s important that you take the time to understand how the basics of it all work. When you understand how betting works, for example, you put yourself in a much more advantageous position to actually win.

What are favorable odds and how should you consider odds before placing money for a bet? This is the basic cornerstone of essentially all of gambling. Read on and we’ll walk you through all the details that you’ll need to know.

What Are Betting Odds?

In a short and sweet sense, all betting odds are is a way of thinking about probability. There is a chance that you’ll win a bet that you place, and there’s a chance you will lose. The higher probability that exists of you winning your bet, the more likely one of those outcomes will arrive.

If you can, as a gambler, play when the odds are more in your favor, you will increase the chances of winning and profiting overall. Sound simple enough?

Let’s get more into the nitty-gritty. Betting odds generally are written out as two numbers with a slash that separates them. For example, you might see betting odds that look like 4/1, 9/1, or even 240/1.

These are fractional odds. They represent a mathematical equation: B / (A+B) = % chance.

So a 4/1 betting odd would mean a 1/5 chance of winning, or 20%. The reverse, 1/4, would mean a 4/5 chance of winning, or an 80% chance.

This is very important to understand, as being able to read these betting odds quickly will be important to your rate of overall success. They are the cornerstone of how gambling works, really.

Where do these odds come from? The sportsbook or outlet you are planning on placing your bet with has decided on these odds based on their own research.

If you think the odds might actually be better than how they are listed, that’s your opportunity to make a move and potentially take home some big winnings.

Determining Winnings

How much do you stand to win when you go up against the odds? Knowing how to read betting odds in terms of the financial element of betting is just as important as the probability. Luckily, there’s not too much you need to do.

Whatever you bet off the latter of the fraction, you will get that number multiplied by the former.

Let’s say the betting odds for a sports game are 5/1. That means for every $1 you spend, you will be able to win an additional $5. That’s really a total of $6 when you consider you get your original stake back as well.

So in the same game, if you were to bet $100, that’s an additional $500 you will take home, and so forth.

The risks aren’t quite so in your favor when you’re betting on a sure thing. Let’s say there was a 1/4 scenario, where there was 75% probability in place. In this situation, for every $4 you bet, you’d only be able to take home an additional $1. Not so hot.

Remember, you win in gambling when you think that the house has underestimated the odds. How much you put down, however, will determine how much you do end up taking home.

You can read some more free super tips if you’re looking to best maximalize your chances of winning. Gambling can take some time to get used to, so practicing these tips and others can help better your performance over time.

Decimal Odds

While fractional odds are among the most popular in the betting world, it might not be the only way in which you see odds listed out. You might also find them listed in the form of decimals.

No matter what form your betting odds come in, you need to be able to read them properly. Even if decimal odds are less common, you’d be foolish not to get familiar with this format as well.

Decimal odds more readily represent the number of winnings you might take home, which is often why they are used. They represent the multiplier of how much you’ll win depending on what you put up.

Again, seeing an example written out can help greatly. If the odds are listed as 5.0, that means for every X you put in, you’ll win that times five, minus the original stake.

So if you bet $10 in this scenario, you’d win $50, minus your original stake, meaning you’d really be taking home $40. 9.0 would mean taking home $80, and 2.0 would mean taking hope $10.

There can also be fractions when it comes to decimal odds. So a 2.5 betting odd would mean you’d be taking home $15 in winnings if you bet $10, and so forth. In this way, they provide some additional flexibility and ease that the fractional variation does not.

There’s no real advantage to one form of betting odds over the other, but it’s important to get familiar with both.

Understanding How Betting Works

If you want to engage in sports betting or really any kind of gambling, it’s important to understand how betting works. The above information can help you to get a handle on how to place a bet and what the betting odds displayed for you really mean.

When Do You Need Life Insurance?

Life Insurance Word Cloud on Blue Background

Despite it being an important thing, only 52% of Americans have a life insurance policy. This means that almost half of us won’t be able to leave our loved ones in good financial care should we pass away unexpectedly.

If you don’t currently have life insurance, then you might be worried now.

So when do you need life insurance? And how can you get a good policy? Keep reading to find out!

When Do You Need Life Insurance?

It’s tough to say when someone needs to get life insurance since it’ll vary based on your unique circumstances. But if you have a bit of extra income every month, then it’s a good idea to get a life insurance policy, regardless of how old you are and how your health’s like. It’s even more important to get life insurance ASAP if you’ve got people dependent on you, such as a spouse and/or children.

Get It as Early as Possible

We understand that there are many bills you need to pay. But if you can, get life insurance as early as possible.

There’s no right answer when it comes to what age to get life insurance, but typically, policies will be cheaper when you’re younger since you won’t have as many health conditions. This helps you lock in lower premiums.

Term vs Whole Life Insurance

The best time to get life insurance will also depend on whether you choose term or whole life insurance.

Term life insurance where your family will get guaranteed payment if you pass away during a specified term. This can be more affordable in the short term, and you can renew the policy if it expires. You can even change it to a whole life policy if you wish.

If you go with term life insurance, it’s better if you buy it at a younger age.

Whole life insurance covers your death without you needing to choose a specific period. For example, the Paradigm Life straight life policy is a type of whole life insurance. This is more expensive, so it may not be feasible for those who are younger. However, it’s still a good idea to get a policy ASAP.

What Does Life Insurance Cover?

Whatever policy you choose, life insurance will disperse money to your beneficiaries in the event of your death. It doesn’t just cover natural by natural causes either; your policy will also cover death by illness, most accidents, and suicide.

Your family can then use this money to pay off debts, such as those inherited by your death. They can also use it to get by while they grieve.

Get Life Insurance Today if You Can

So when do you need life insurance? There’s no specific age, but the earlier you can do it, the better. Not only will you be immediately covered in case of untimely death, but the premiums will be lower as well.

Stop asking yourself, “do you need life insurance?” The fact is, it’s always a wise choice to sign up for a policy, especially if you’ve got dependents. By being prepared for the worst, you’ll ensure that your loved ones are taken care of, even after you’re gone.

Indoor and Outdoor Basketball Court Flooring Options

Are you a homeowner or business owner looking to install a basketball court on your property? Or, you may be a school facilities manager, tasked with adding or renovating an existing gym at your institution.

In any case, it’s important to choose the right equipment and accessories. This includes paying close attention to the type of basketball court flooring available on the market.

Today, we’re walking you through the pros and cons of some of the most popular and well-performing options.

Indoor Basketball Court Flooring: Top Options to Consider

An indoor basketball court offers players year-round access to their favorite sport. Whether it’s sunny or snowy outside, they can rest assured that their equipment is covered and protected.

Let’s take a look at a few of the different types of flooring that are ideal for shooting hoops indoors.

Indoor Modular Tiles

As their name implies, modular court tiles are designed to snap together. You can purchase as many as you need to fill your space. This is one of the quickest and most wallet-friendly options, as well as the most customizable.

These floor tiles are available in a wide range of colors and designs, as well as different wood grains. This makes it easy to fully tailor your court to meet your exact needs and specifications. For instance, you can choose tiles that represent your school’s colors or your company’s logo!

While most tiles contain a base layer of polypropylene, the top surface material can vary. Typically, you’ll find some type of commercial-grade plastic or laminate. Look for tiles that advertise wear resistance and a protective coating.

Padded Flooring Rolls

If you’re planning a rubber basketball court, then look into padded court flooring rolls. Each roll includes a rubber base, fused together with a durable urethane wear layer, and topped with a special vinyl layer.

These are usually available in wood grain designs, though you may be able to find some solid-colored options. This is a great option when you’re looking for an indoor basketball court that looks like the real deal but won’t break the bank.

Flooring Planks

Modern wooden basketball floors are available in gorgeous, sleek finishes. You can also find planks that fit in place without the use of nails. While real planks aren’t as economical as rubber alternatives, these can be an attractive alternative to a rubber or tile-based design.

Outdoor Basketball Court Flooring: Top Options to Consider

An outdoor basketball court offers a unique athletic experience. With this type of setup, you can enjoy the outdoor elements while engaging in your favorite game. To maintain their form and function, most of these floors offer enhanced durability, as well as UV protection, and water resistance.

While indoor courts are available in plank-style options, most outdoor courts work as interlocking tile grids. Before purchasing, check to ensure that the tiles you’re considering come equipped with integrated expansion joints. This way, you can be confident that your playing surface is even and steady, even if the ground expands and contracts under the summer sun.

Next, let’s take a look at some of the top flooring options in this category.

Outdoor Modular Tiles

Modular tiles for outdoor use look similar to those designed for indoor courts. However, these usually include special materials designed to withstand high impacts. In fact, most are designed to hold static loads of more than 15,000 pounds per foot.

As you browse the available options, be sure to look for outdoor tiles that can also resist the standing water that can result after days or weeks of precipitation. The best tiles feature a flow-through design that allows water to quickly dissipate as soon as it hits the surface.

Not only does this feature ensure a consistently dry playing surface, but you can also rest assured that your floor will be free from grimy mold or mildew.

Premium Sports Tiles

If you’re looking for effective but cheap outdoor basketball court flooring, then basic modular tiles will do the job. However, if aesthetics and appearance are top considerations, then you may want to consider investing in premium sports tiles instead. Start your search at SnapSports, where you’ll find a variety of indoor and outdoor tiles used by the NBA and AAU!

These tiles offer enhanced durability and protection, as well as a greater degree of shock absorption and traction. Most manufacturers build specially-placed vents to each tile to help prevent slips and falls.

These premium tiles give your court a seamless, streamlined appearance. In addition to basketball courts, they’re also great for outdoor tennis courts, racketball courts, and more. Once the floor is installed, you can paint or tape lines to create the right surface for your favorite game.

Asphalt Tarmacadam

Asphalt tarmacadam (or tarmac) floors require a stone subfloor. The material is comprised of a special stone and tar mixture that’s designed to offer enhanced durability. Once you pour it, you’ll need to level it.

This material is ultra-strong and long-lasting when it dries. It also provides excellent traction, and you can paint it according to your preference. Users who have installed an asphalt tarmacadam floor note how high the hard surface can bounce their basketballs.

The only drawback? This surface isn’t nearly as soft or bouncy as a rubber tile floor. If you fall, you’ll feel it!

Choose the Best Basketball Court Flooring

If you’re investing in a basketball court for your property, you want to make sure you’re getting the best one possible. The right basketball court flooring can make all the difference in the way your court looks and feels.

As you browse the options, keep your budget in mind. The best floor in the world isn’t viable if it takes funds from the rest of your project. Before long, you’ll be dribbling and shooting hoops just like LeBron!

As you perfect your game, we’re here to keep you updated with the latest lifestyle needs. Check back often for more advice!

What Essential Tremors Could be a Sign of with Joon Faii Ong

Flat vector illustration of a tremor. Trembling in the hands-symptoms of various mental disorders, panic, fear, Parkinson’s disease. Isolated design on a white background.

Dr. Joon Faii Ong is a recognized expert on Essential Tremors. He explained that many forms of Tremors could affect people with Parkinson’s Disease or Essential Tremors, which is Dr. Ong’s area of expertise. Essential Tremors can also affect people with Parkinson’s Disease or those who have had a stroke or some type of brain injury, such as traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Essential tremor is the most common movement disorder, and it affects approximately 10 percent of persons over age 65. This type of tremor has no other symptoms than trembling or shaking. Therefore, it is sometimes simply referred to as a “benign tremor.” There are many forms of Essential Tremors, but they all share these three key features:

  • Involuntary shaking of the hands when they are at rest.
  • Tremors increase with action, such as moving the arms or holding a cup.
  • Tremor intensity decreases when the hand grips an object tightly.

Essential Tremors can be an indicator of several other conditions that can affect the brain or other parts of the body, including:

Parkinson’s Disease

Tremors that indicate Parkinson’s Disease often begin on one side of the body and affect the hand, arm, or leg. They can also cause a shuffling gate when walking.

Stroke

Following a stroke, some people experience tremors as part of their recovery process. These tremors usually do not manifest until several weeks after the initial incident and are known as “post-stroke” tremors.

Post-Traumatic Brain Injury

Post-traumatic or acquired brain injuries can also cause a form of tremor known as a “mild TBI,” which stands for mild traumatic brain injury. This type of injury can result from a one-time event, such as a fall, accident, sports injury, or car accident.

Brain Tumors

Tremors can also indicate the presence of brain tumors. If you have a tremor and experience other symptoms, such as mood swings, coordination problems, or vision changes, seek immediate medical attention to rule out these potential causes.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

Multiple sclerosis is a degenerative central nervous system disorder. The effects and symptoms of MS can vary widely from person to person and range from numbness, lack of coordination, and blurred vision to tremors and unconscious or uncontrolled movement, such as spasticity or dystonia.

Friedreich’s Ataxia

Friedreich’s ataxia is an inherited disorder of the nervous system. Symptoms can include impaired balance, lack of coordination, and tremors or “shaky” hands.

Dystonia

People with dystonia experience uncontrollable movements of the limbs, torso, face, and vocal cords. These involuntary muscle contractions may cause significant pain and lead to abnormal postures ranging from slight tilts of the head or neck turns to full body contortions. Dystonia is usually more noticeable during times of stress and can result from several potential causes, including:

  • Injury or trauma that affects the central nervous system.
  • Genetic abnormalities present from birth cause progressive degeneration of certain areas of the brain.
  • A side-effect from medications, such as antipsychotic drugs, antibiotics, and chemotherapy agents.

Intensive English Program – Northwestern Polytechnic University

Northwestern Polytechnic University (NPU) announced it had received accreditation by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA), the only specialized, independent U.S. national assessment organization that sets standards for English programs in higher education institutions.

The Council recognizes the CEAA for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

NPU’s Intensive English Program (IEP) will now be included in CHEA’s Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs database.

This is significant because the IEP has become an integral part of NPU’s success, as more than 1,000 students enroll annually to study English for academic purposes.

The IEP collaborates with the university’s academic programs to provide students with additional learning opportunities through orientation sessions, presentations, and guest speakers. Students also participate in workshops and activities during their free time for further cultural integration and communication.

Helping Non-English Speaking Students Succeed

According to The Institute of International Education’s (IIE) 2015 Open Doors Report, the number of international students in the United States has tripled over a decade—increasing 5 percent from 723,277 international students studying at all levels in the U.S. during the 2014-2015 academic year to a record high of more than one million students.

This increase reflects the growing demand for English language training for international students across the nation. NPU’s IEP is a key part of the university’s mission to provide English language training and American educational opportunities to students worldwide.

IEP students come from more than 90 countries, with an increasing number coming from China, followed by India, Saudi Arabia, and South Korea. Providing students with an authentic learning environment that addresses the varying academic needs of non-native English speakers is vital to their success.

To help maintain this standard, NPU provides educational resources and support that help students reach their potential. The IEP offers four levels of instruction: pre-beginner, beginner, intermediate and advanced. Students can enroll in courses up to five times per week on campus or online. They are also provided access to textbooks, laptops, language assessment tests, and student portals.

In addition to the IEP’s academic program, students have access to other services on campus, including housing, dining facilities, and recreational activities. The university also supports faculty members who are dedicated to teaching English as a second language.

Meeting the Needs of Silicon Valley Employers

In recent years, the demand for English language training has increased from students entering colleges and universities and from corporations seeking to develop a bilingual workforce.

Silicon Valley is one of the major hubs in the U.S., where companies have been on a hiring spree over the past few years – creating a huge demand for international talent. In addition, large corporations, including Apple, IBM, and Google, have hired foreign workers because of the language barrier.

Many universities have created English learning programs to train for a higher degree simultaneously in response to this demand. The IEP has partnered with several major colleges and universities in Silicon Valley to prepare students for these opportunities. These partnerships have added to the university’s success in meeting the educational needs of international students.

Exciting Research in the Field of Biology – Steven Rinder

The biological sciences are an ever-evolving field, with discoveries made daily. Biology major Steven Rinder has identified some exciting discoveries and research in biology you should be aware of:

1. Discovering new species

A new species of sea slug has been discovered. The first terrestrial animal found to absorb and metabolize nitrogen from the air. This adaptation will allow it to live in an environment with very little soil, as it can use the resources available in its surroundings to survive.

2. Spider Senses

In a recent experiment, spiders were shown to learn by watching and observing the behavior of other spiders. The results were published in Scientific Reports, and it is exciting because it shows that spiders may have social learning skills, which have never been recorded before.

3. Electricity from Sound

Scientists at MIT have created a system that can turn sound waves into electricity. This technology can create energy from any sound, such as music, conversations, and even human movement. In addition, it can power multiple devices at once.

4. The World’s First Gene-Edited Babies

A Chinese scientist named He Jiankui claims that he was recently able to create gene-editing in twin girls born in November 2018. The research was done on embryos with the CRISPR-Cas9 technique, but the embryos were not allowed to grow past the 8-cell stage to achieve this goal.

5. Spider Silk for Human Use

Humans use silkworms in the production of silk. However, spiders make their silk. Researchers at MIT have recently learned how to re-create spider silk in labs, and it is stronger than steel yet softer than human hair. It can also potentially be used in medical settings to assist wound healing due to its hardiness against blood clotting.

6. Scientist Finds Parasitic Worm DNA Remains after Insect Consumption

A scientist has discovered that parasitic worms can stay alive in the digestive system of insect eaters. The study was published in Nature Communications, showing that these worms can manipulate the behavior of their hosts so they can use them for reproduction.

7. Helping Blind People See Color

A lab at MIT is developing a new device called an ‘eyeshade’ which has electrodes capable of stimulating cells inside human eyes to allow people with color blindness to see colors normally. This device will also be used for other purposes, such as assisting with cell loss in retinal degeneration disorders like age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

8. New Insights into How Cells Divide and Die in Brain Tumors

Researchers have recently discovered that when brain tumors start, they do not arise from stem cells but rather specialized non-stem cells in the brain. These findings were published in Nature Cell Biology, and it may mean that current cancer treatments could be more effective on some tumors if this new knowledge is implemented.

9. Colon Cancer Can Be Detected with Blood Testing

Researchers at Johns Hopkins University discovered a new biomarker that can predict colon cancer before symptoms appear. Testing of the blood could predict whether or not patients would develop colon cancer for eight years; eventually, it could not predict anything after three years because the test was too accurate. This discovery allows doctors to detect problems early and save lives during routine checkups.
