What Types of Boat Docks Are on Today’s Bodies of Water?

You love your waterfront home and the stunning aquatic views that greet you every day! Water has always calmed your soul and you’ve dreamed of owning a home on the water your whole life and now that dream is reality.

Waterfront homes don’t come cheap though. Studies show that waterfront homes cost 46% more than similar homes located more inland.

The one thing that would make your home perfect is a dock for your boat. But what kinds of boat docks are there?

We put together a list of the different kinds of docks you could see on today’s bodies of water. Keep reading to find inspiration for adding a dock to your waterfront home.

Types of Dock Materials

The first thing you should consider when deciding on what kind of dock to build is what material you want to make the dock out of. Here are a few of the most common dock materials you’ll see.

Plastic Docks

Plastic and polyurithane docks withstand the test of time and the punishing weathering of the water. Using plastic for your dock means you’ll need to spend much less time and money on dock maintenance!

Wood Docks

When you imagine an old fashioned dock, what is it made of? Almost everyone would think of a wooden weathered and silver from years of use.

There are some down sides to using wood for your dock material. Wood will degrade over time, even if you use sealant! As a wooden dock ages, they’re susceptible to rotting, warping, splitting and/or splintering.

Aluminum Docks

Another option is to use aluminum to build your dock. Aluminum won’t weather like wood does, but it will corrode over time. That means they’ll last longer than your wooden docks, but not as long as a dock made of plastic.

Dock Lights

One thing most well made docks of all kinds have is good lighting. If you’re trying to dock your boat at dusk, it’s harder to see than you might think! Having a few solar dock lights ensure that you can see your dock when bringing in your boat and you won’t slip off the edge and into the water.

Temporary Dock Options

The first kind of dock you’ll see is a temporary dock. You can store these docks away when you don’t need them, but feel less like standing on dry land. Here are a few kinds of temporary docks.

Piling Dock

If you live on the ocean or where the water level varies by a lot, a piling dock might work for you. You build a piling dock by inserting several large beams (or pilings) into the ground as far out into the water as you want your dock to go. Then the dock connects to the pilings using hoops or rollers which will allow the dock to rise and fall as the water level changes.

Floating Dock

This kind of dock sits on the surface of the water using airtight drums, often made with plastic. They raise and lower with the tides, so they’ll never end up underwater. You can often buy these in premade sections that make a floating dock a easy, modular dock option!

Pipe Dock

If you like the idea of a piling dock, but not the price tag, look at a few pipe docks. These kinds of docks use an aluminum frame that is easy to move and store in case the water freezes.

Another benefit of a pipe dock is that they have the least contact with the environment and the least impact on the local nature!

Permanent Boat Docks

If you have the space and you don’t mind having a dock jutting out into the waterway all the time, a permanent dock is the ticket. These are some types of permanent docks for your waterfront home.

Suspension Dock

A suspension dock is like a suspension bridge, but it only connects to land on one end. These docks look super sleek and modern, but come with a hefty price tag!

Those looking to install a suspension dock should note that you can’t remove these docks in the case of strong winds or storms. During severe weather, a suspension dock could incur damage and need expensive repairs.

Crib Dock

This kind of dock involves placing large wooden crates (open wooden boxes) and then filling them with large rocks and boulders. Then, decking lays on top of the crates, making a super sturdy raised platform over the water.

Keep in mind that these kinds of docks will disrupt any natural currents along side it and will impact the environment. But, these sturdy docks last deckades with very little maintenance effort.

Stop Daydreaming about a Dock and Do It!

these are some of the most common boat docks you’ll see with today’s waterfront homes. If none of these options suit your fancy, you could even have a custom dock made!

Having a dock means you have a spot where you can tie up your boat, spend time fishing without going out onto the boat, or even kick back and enjoy the scenery! If you’re looking for a way to make your waterfront home even better, a dock will do it!

We hope you enjoyed reading this article and that you learned a few new types of docks for waterfront homes. If you’re looking for more home improvement tips, travel tips, and much more, check out the rest of our blog today!

Flood Repair: This Is How to Restore Your Home After a Flood

Did you recently experience flooding in your area? Did the floodwater enter your home? Then you need to act quickly and consider immediate flood repair to arrest the problem.

As millions of homes in the United States became flood zones because of climate change, we can expect more homeowners to experience water damage due to flooding. And when we talk about the impact of water damage, it transcends the financial side of things.

Water damage can lead to health concerns, particularly respiratory problems. Molds, mildew, and fungi may develop if you leave your house soaking in floodwater.

But how exactly do you restore your home after a flood? What are the immediate steps for addressing a flooded house?

Continue reading below for a comprehensive guide on repairing your flooded home.

Start with a Flood Repair Claim

The first thing you should do before proceeding with your flood repair is to check your home insurance. You want to make sure if you have coverage for flood claims. Connect with your adjuster and schedule an immediate visit.

Give the adjuster all the details regarding the incident. The adjuster will examine the extent of the flood and the damages that arose from it.

Before the adjuster arrives, take photos of your home. These photos will serve as your inventory of everything that is inside your home. Also, keep all the damaged items.

And in case you encounter problems concerning denied or underpaid claims, consult with a reputable firm that specializes in insurance claims.

Check the Electrical Systems and Other Hazards

Next, you want to clean and dry up the area as quickly as possible. This is important as you proceed with the examination of your electrical systems. Before you check any electrical lines, make sure to turn off the main unit.

Do the same thing for your water and gas lines.

If you are in the dark as to which parts to check, read up on this guide by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA).

Also, check if you smell any gas leaks. If there is, leave the house and call your utility company immediately.

Extract the Water

Next, you want to extract the water to keep mold development at bay. Before you do so, make sure to remove all the items within your reach.

Put them in a dry area and don’t discard them. You need to keep these items and include them in your inventory.

As for the water extraction, start with your carpets. Remove the carpets and suck out the water using a submersible pump. Alternatively, you can use a wet vacuum.

Make sure to open all windows as you dry out the area. Take note that water extraction is not a simple task. Often, you may need some help from a flood damage restoration company.

Water and Food Sanitation

After drying out the flooded areas and items like drywall and wood beams, you need to clean and sanitize them. Sort your utensils if flood water soaked them. Separate the wooden ones like spoons and cutting boards.

Do the same thing with your plastic utensils, as well as baby items. These include all pacifiers, nipples, and baby bottles that the floodwater reached.

Check all the food items that you have and sort the undamaged ones. These are your canned goods and those that are in plastic or air-tight pouches. But make sure to wash them thoroughly.

Buy a disinfecting solution and sanitize the cans and pouches. Remove all the wet labels and replace them. Make sure to write the expiration date using a permanent marker.

As for the water, get a filter or clean cloth and strain it. Thereafter, heat the water until it boils. Keep the boil running for a full minute then let it cool down.

Remove Everything

Aside from removing the carpets, you also need to remove everything that is within your reach. Even if the items didn’t come in contact with water, remove them as well.

The floodwater inside your house can create moisture and humidity. In turn, they can still damage your other items if you keep the latter inside.

Be careful when removing electrical appliances. Before touching any of these items, make sure to cut off electricity. If there are electrical items that are under floodwater, do not attempt to salvage them until you are sure that the power is completely off.

Examine the Walls

Another important part of the house you need to check is your walls. This is also one of the most tedious tasks you need to go through. You want to open up your walls in areas that have floodwater.

Even if these walls do not show any signs of damage, as long as the water reaches them, you need to open them up. Doing so will keep your walls from suffering from structural decay, odors, and molds.

After removing any water buildup, increase ventilation in the room. If the insulation is also damp, remove it accordingly. If you see any streaks of mud on the walls, clean them up using a disinfectant.

You also want to remove your drywall. The key is to dry your walls completely. This, however, will take around a month or so.

Until then, leave your walls open.

Mind the Flooring

Last but not least, you need to replace all damaged flooring. This applies to hardwood, laminate, and tiling. Do the same thing for your subfloor.

Remove the floor coverings and let the subfloor dry up. This will take months to dry up but you can speed up the process by using a dehumidifier.

If you have wood floors, remove one board every few feet away. This will keep the buckling and swelling to a minimum.

Make sure to clean the entire floor area. Disinfect and dry them up to keep molds away.

Protect Your Home in All Aspects

Learning how to perform flood repair is crucial in containing the impact of floodwater. Addressing it early can save you from further expenses and complications. And if things become too tough to handle, it is wise to have a professional step in.

But water damage isn’t the only problem that can cause serious damage to your home. Learn how to deal with other threats by reading our other articles. We discuss topics that will help protect your home’s structural integrity and more.

Time’s up: How Can I Get Out of a Timeshare for Free?

Eighty-five percent of people who buy a timeshare regret the purchase. Only a small fraction of these buyers, however, move fast enough to cancel their purchase during the legally-mandated recission period. The rest are left with timeshares they do not want or cannot use, and all the costs associated with them.

Unfortunately, figuring out how to get rid of a timeshare is much harder than buying one. Here’s what you need to know about avoiding scams and unloading your timeshare for free.

Timeshare Basics

What is a timeshare and why do people want out of them so badly? As you probably already know, timeshares are a form of vacation property.

Buyers purchase rights to a certain amount of time at a property. In return, they pay annual fees. These fees can be hefty and go up over time, leading many owners to seek a way out.

How to Get Out of a Timeshare

When you buy into a timeshare, you sign a legal contract. Owners who want to get out of timeshare properties often find that doing so is a time-consuming, expensive, and complicated process.

The primary options for getting out of a timeshare include:

  • Selling it
  • Renting it out
  • Gifting or donating it
  • Deeding it back to the timeshare company
  • Defaulting
  • Getting help

Selling

Owners who look into how to sell a timeshare often find that the resale market is a nightmare. The sale process can be long and difficult, and they rarely get back what they invested in the original purchase. Reselling can be a good option, however, for owners who need to recoup some money from the property.

Renting

Renting is another option that sounds good in theory but seldom works in practice. It is time-consuming and difficult to rent out your timeshare if your contract even allows you to do so. Owners are also rarely able to rent their properties for enough to recoup what they are paying in fees.

Gifting or Donating

While is it possible to gift your timeshare to someone, this only works if the other party is willing to fully assume the financial burdens associated with the property. While donating property shares to charity is a popular idea, most legitimate charities will not accept timeshares unless you continue to pay the fees which does you no good.

Moreover, the laws and tax consequences around such gifts can lead to unpleasant situations.

Deeding It Back to the Timeshare Company

Increasingly, timeshare developers are quietly offering programs by which owners can give their timeshare back to the company they bought it from. These programs can be hard to find, as developers intentionally do not advertise them. They can also be expensive, as owners often have to pay several thousand dollars to surrender their shares.

Defaulting

Defaulting is when owners simply stop paying their timeshare fees. While this will eventually result in foreclosure and loss of the property, it can also ruin your credit and finances.

Getting Help

For many owners struggling to get out of timeshare properties for free, the best solution is to get help. Working with specialty companies who deal exclusively with this issue is often the fastest, cheapest, and least stressful solution.

Making Good Financial Choices

Getting rid of a timeshare can be a great choice financially. Find more great information on how to make the best choices for your money in our finance section.

4 Tips to Send Cockroaches Skittering From Your Home

Did you know that there are more insects than humans on the planet? Ratio-wise, there are 200 million insects for every person!

The good news is that most of them are harmless. Having said that, some species can cause issues.

Take cockroaches, for example, they can be a reservoir for a number of bacteria including salmonella, streptococcus, and staphylococcus. That’s not all, they can also harbor viruses such as those responsible for polio.

Do you have a cockroach problem in the house? Want to know how to kill roaches fast? If so, you’re on the right page.

Keep reading for some tips!

About Cockroaches

Cockroaches are found on every continent in the world except Antarctica. While they don’t bite, they can transmit diseases by vomiting and defecating on food.

Generally speaking, they’re found in food preparation areas such as kitchens. For example, you might find them in wall cracks, below sinks, kitchen cupboards, and behind the refrigerator.

4 Tips on How to Kill Roaches Fast

There are a number of things that you can do to remove these pesky creatures. Here’s what you need to know.

1. Cut Off Their Food and Water Source

Remove their food and water source and they won’t be able to survive and repopulate.

For example, it’s a good idea to seal off open bags of food in the kitchen. That way, cockroaches won’t be able to get into them. Similarly, you want to vacuum or wipe up any crumbs that are on the floor.

2. Set Out Cockroach Bait

Cockroach baits are a type of pest control that contains a slow-acting insecticide.  Once they ingest the bait, they will crawl away and eventually die (it usually takes one to three days). In some cases, they might also take it back to their nests.

Here’s a tip—don’t place the bait in an area where children or pets can access it.

3. Use Boric Acid

Boric acid is a natural cockroach killer. Mix three teaspoons of the powder with three teaspoons of sugar and three teaspoons of water and place it at the base of a jar.

Leave the lid off and place the jar somewhere with heavy roach traffic. As soon as they come into the solution, they will dehydrate and die.

4. Hire a Pest Control Company

Depending on the infestation, you may need to hire a pest control company. They’ll have all the tools that they need to eliminate the roach problem in your house.

For those of you who are in the Park Royal, London area, you may want to check out https://ccsenvironmental.uk/.

7 Warnings Signs That You Need a New Roof

The average midrange roof replacement costs upwards of $20,000, but the average homeowner in 2017 spent just over $6,000 to have their roof replaced.

The best thing you can do for your home and your pockets is to catch any issues before they grow worse. As a homeowner, it’s crucial to know what warning signs to look for.

Are you wondering if your residential roof needs repairs or replacement? From leaks to damage, keep reading to learn 7 warning signs that it might be time for new roofing on your home.

1. Your Roof Is Old

Depending on the roof you own, a roof can last anywhere from 20 to 50 plus years. Shingle roofs tend to sit on the lower side, with an average lifespan of about 20 years.

Generally speaking, one should expect a residential home roof to last between 20 and 25 years.

How old is your existing roof? Was your existing roof installed over several other layers? If the answer is yes and your roof is over 20 years old, it’s likely time for a replacement.

Is it properly ventilated? Was the old roof removed before the most recent roofing job? All these factors influence the lifetime of your roof.

2. Your Roof Has Algae or Moss

Does your roof have significant dark spots? Algae causes dark streaks on roofs. It doesn’t always harm the roof, though. Typically, these streaks can be removed by spraying a bleach and water combination on your roof.

It’s important to use low water pressure, though, so you don’t knock protective granules off your roof’s shingles. If you opt to clean your roof on your own, be sure to protect your greenery from bleach run-off, too.

Algae can lead to significant roof damage, depending on how much of it there is or how deeply it has penetrated your roof. It’s a good idea to call a roofing service if you notice algae spots so that you can repair any damages before you have to replace your roof.

Moss grows on roof surfaces, too, especially those that don’t get a lot of sunlight. While it’s often cosmetic, it can become more than that. Moss holds moisture against the surface and can cause significant damage over time.

3. Curling and Buckling Shingles

Curled or buckling shingles are often a sheer sign that it’s time to replace your home roof. Take a look at the slopes of your house, especially those that get direct sunlight.

Do you notice that your shingles are losing granules or curling? If the answer is yes, it could indicate that the shingles have aged past their life expectancy. It could also mean that your roof is defective.

If you notice curling or buckling, don’t wait to contact a professional roofing company. They’ll assess the damage and let you know if you might be entitled to reimbursement from a previous installer.

4. Roof Valleys or Missing Shingles

Are you shingles falling apart? Do you have any missing shingles? If the answer is yes, it’s probably time for a new roof.

The valleys of your roof are the most integral areas. Rain and snow and other debris flow through valleys and into your gutters. If the valleys become compromised, your roof could become susceptible to roof leaks.

Roof leaks can lead to additional home damage, which is why it’s vital to call a roofing service as soon as you notice compromised or missing shingles.

If you do notice missing shingles, check to see if all the shingle tabs are properly in place, or ask professional roofers to do so for you.

5. Granules in Your Gutters

Check your gutters. Are they loaded up with shingle granules? Towards the end of their life cycle, roofs begin to lose more granules.

If you notice the darker color on some parts of the roof, it could indicate algae, but it could also indicate that the granules have begun to wear away.

If your gutters contain lots of shingle granules, then it means those shingles have reached the end of their life.

6. Daylight and Moisture

Have you noticed any daylight coming through the roof boards on your home? Go up into your attic to see if there is even the slightest amount of daylight coming through.

If you can safely walk on your roof, notice if you feel any spongy areas as you walk around. If you feel a bit of bounce or sponginess under your feet, it means that the roof’s underlying decking is weakened.

The weakening results from moisture damage, which means it’s probably time to get your roof replaced.

7. Chimney Flashing

Does your home have a chimney? The chimney area is of great concern. What is your flashing made of?

If your chimney flashing contains tar or roof cement, it might need replacing with a more long-term flashing solution. Water-tight fitting metal flashing systems last much longer.

If the flashing is damaged, get it fixed as soon as possible, before you have to replace the entire roof.

Don’t Wait to Get Your Residential Roof Checked

Is your residential roof upwards of 20 years old, and you’re wondering if it might need replacement? Have you noticed changes such as curling or buckling shingles?

Do you have a leak? From dark algae spots to granules in your gutters, there are many warning signs that indicate it’s time for a new residential roof.

The best thing you can do if you’re unsure is to contact a licensed, professional roofing service to make an assessment of your roof’s damage before it grows worse. Many roofing services offer free assessments and accurate quotes, so you shouldn’t have to worry about breaking the bank for that first visit.

Where Can You Gamble Online? a Comprehensive List

Statisticians estimate that the gambling industry will be worth over $560 billion worldwide by 2022.

This is due, in part to the recent relaxation of betting rules in the United States. More states now allow sports gambling, and online gambling is also coming into play.

So, is it legal to gamble online where you’re from? That depends on the area. However, legality is slowly becoming the norm everywhere.

Read on as we look at a few of the main places in which online gambling is legal.

Is It Legal to Gamble Online Where You’re From?

The rules on online gambling vary widely from one jurisdiction to the next. We’ve looked at some of the main global areas and their approach to online gambling below.

United States

America has always had a more restrictive approach to gambling, in general, than other countries. Today’s situation in relation to internet betting is quite complex.

On a federal level, online gambling is banned. However, the Supreme Court has provided that individual states can make their own rules about it, which means that the legality of it depends on the area of the country in which you’re based.

While betting within your own state may be fine, placing a bet with a bookie in another state may contravene federal law.

Canada

Canada also has a slightly complicated relationship with online gambling. Running an online casino within Canada is illegal; however, Canadian residents are free to bet with gambling providers that are legally established in an offshore location.

Europe

Europe contains a lot of different countries with many different rules on gambling (as well as everything else). Generally, however, European countries are more relaxed when it comes to online gambling laws than their North American counterparts.

Some countries, including France and Germany, do have restrictions. However, the practice of online gambling is generally legal.

Different Gaming Options

Once you’re satisfied that you’re not going to run afoul of the law, it’s time to decide what kind of things you want to bet on. The internet offers countless choices when it comes to gambling.

Sports betting is becoming increasingly popular among online gamblers. You no longer have to go to the track to bet on horses to the dogs; you can do it on your phone or laptop, from the comfort of your home.

Playing slot games online is another gambling activity that has grown in popularity of late. Casino classics are now widely available from online betting providers.

Making Money & Having Fun by Gambling Online

So, is it legal to gamble online? As you can now see, this isn’t a question with a straightforward answer. That said, you can be reasonably confident that betting on the internet won’t land you in trouble in the vast majority of cases.

So, pick a game you enjoy and get gambling!

As an online business, you have probably lost customers because the shipping costs were high. Even though you were tempted to lower the prices, you probably couldn’t do so, because you needed to protect your profit margin.

Ecommerce is not easy, and almost every online entrepreneur has faced a similar issue. But don’t worry; you can effectively reduce the prices to satisfy your clients while maintaining the profitability of your business.

Keep reading to learn more.

1. Consider Zone Shipping

Zone shipping is an affordable technique for transporting goods to the same zone. The carrier collects different individual items whose destination is the same.

Upon arrival at the common destination, the items are sorted, grouped individually, and then shipped to the individual destinations.

For instance, if the goods’ source is Ohio and the destination zone is Florida, you will accumulate all Florida items to be shipped together.

From there, they can be transported to the various parts of Florida depending on the buyers’ locations. There is only one trip for this technique, and this means that you can save on the back and forth costs for the initial shipping.

However, this method can only work for the less urgent goods that you can store for an extended period as you accumulate the others.

2. Utilize the Best Packing Practices

Packing is a key determinant of your shipping costs. Unless you want an experience-based packing, you can reduce your overall shipping costs using a few smart packing practices.

The first smart idea is to utilize the packaging services provided by your carrier. When you pack on your own, you will exceed the dimensions and your carrier might charge you more.

The carriers’ packaging is tailored to reduce costs, and you can save substantial amounts by utilizing the service.

Another smart packing idea is to use the smallest boxes possible so that the items can fill well. You might also consider the lightweight parcels which don’t add massive weight to the package.

Lastly, you can recycle your packaging materials to cut the costs of buying new bags every time. Recycling will not only help you cut costs but also reduce your garbage collection.

3. Ask Your Carrier for Discounts

You should have excellent negotiation skills for not only shipping but also for the other aspects of your business. When signing for a short term or long-term business deal with your carrier, ask them to reduce shipping costs for you.

Most carriers don’t have fixed costs. The fees are usually open for negotiations, and you can strike a great deal if you negotiate well.

In return, you may promise to become a loyal client and work with them for an extended period.

Before you negotiate, compare what other carriers offer so that you don’t demean your carrier’s services. Also, provide the right packaging basics, including weight, dimensions, and destinations.

4. Use Air Delivery in Urgent Situations Only

Air delivery is costlier when compared to ground delivery. To cut costs, you should only use it to transport perishable goods or items with urgent needs.

Otherwise, you will be wasting money by using air express to transport durable goods that are not urgent. Likewise, you may use FedEx or UPS ground services instead if zone 2 air express deliveries.

Always consult with the buyer before shipping. If they accept the ground delivery, then you will save a lot of money.

5. Use Third-Party Shipping Services

Third-party services can help you cut the shipping costs. They provide a wide array of shipping options, meaning that you can choose the fittest for your business.

Furthermore, since their work is to ship only, they have a rich knowledge of the shipping processes. They know many carrier firms too, and they can negotiate on your behalf for incredible rates.

The standard third party shipping services are aggregators that require you to sign on their platform before working together. You can track the delivery processes, and you can also get better deals if you become a regular client.

Note that many carrier service providers might require you to prepay to qualify for discounts. If you can, you should consider this offer mainly if you intend to transport similar items with the same weight.

6. Consider Flat Rate Shipping

The flat rate shipping plan provides a standard rate for all the deliveries you will make, irrespective of sizes or weight.

Besides helping you cut shipping costs, the flat rate tactic can win you more clients. The method is, therefore, crucial to new businesses that are still building their brand.

Your clients will be motivated to buy bulk goods because, after all, the shipping fee is the same. You can test this technique’s efficiency by identifying a common area where you ship your products more often.

7. Educate Your Customers

The last important method for reducing shipping costs is to educate your customers. If you inform your clients on the shipping costs to expect, they will make informed decisions, and probably, they will not abandon the cart at the last minute.

Only 22% of online merchants mention the shipping costs on the homepage. Remember that buyers hate hidden charges, and the last thing they would like to know is that they have to pay specific fees.

So, if you offer shipping charges, these tips can help you reduce the charging costs:

  • Provide a shipping calculator
  • Create pick up points for your goods to cut the transport costs and avoid inconveniencing your buyers

Be transparent with your customers on how to transport the goods. Discuss everything, too, so that you won’t have to incur extra shipping costs covering up for information you didn’t provide. In the long run, you will win your clients’ trust while still lowering the costs.

Reduce Your Shipping Costs Today!

As an online merchant, you should try the strategies which give you a competitive advantage. One effective strategy is to reduce the shipping costs to attract more clients without affecting your profitability.

So, follow the above tips and adopt others that promise lower shipping costs.
